West of Flagstaff via Spiers Track

Flagstaff Square23/04/2025. West of Flagstaff via Spiers Track. Grade 4.5. Trampers.  Leaders: Pam Cocks & Karen McInnes.
Heavy rain overnight put the Tramp Grade up to 4.5 where John and his Harem of 8 departed at 9.20 from Spiers road. A short walk up a shingle road over a style took us onto Spiers Track. We followed the 4 wheel drive track uphill over scruffy farmland for 30 mins before entering Spiers Track proper.

Taieri Mouth Millennium Track

On a cool but fine morning 18 hikers gathered at Riverside Rd, Taieri Mouth near the entrance to the track for a lovely walk through the bush to the lookout.

“Well it may be a case of third time lucky that we finally made this trip, especially with the help of Graeme’s map. 43 members in 11 cars enjoyed the ‘sunday’ drive to Kaitangata where we met up at the local you know what, before travelling on in convoy up and over that impressive bridge onto the island and around to the pumping station where we all parked up.

After leaving Peter Johnston Park at 0900, seven cars regrouped and collected more passengers at Traquair Junction before 30 hardy outdoor enthusiasts proceeded in convey about 11 km down Mahinerangi Road to park near the woolshed about 500 m past the entrance to Verterburn Station at Rapid Number 1013.
