Ten hikers arrived at the Moeraki Beach Reserve where we were joined by 2 others. Conditions very different from reconnoitre the week before.

05/08/2026. Memorial Park to Confluence of the Silverstream and Taieri River. Grade 2. Combined. Leaders: Barbara Shackell and Sandy Lawn.
Following the Antarctic-like weather that hit Otago overnight on Monday 3 August, an early call was made to postpone the trip to Puketapu, with an intent to substitute with a walk down the Silverstream to its confluence with the Taieri River.

Forty hardy souls met at Bayfield Park adorned with appropriate winter gear to counteract the crisp beautiful winter’s day.

A frosty 2 degrees start for 25 happy hikers as we headed off beside a very muddy and flooded Taieri River.

It was a bitterly cold start to the day. We had a brief gathering at Memorial Park before heading to the Southern Cemetery meeting the town folk who were joining us.

On a pleasant morning 15 hikers meet up with 6 others at Port Chalmers turn off and drove to Purakaunui Domain, where we had our morning tea stop.

On doing the recce we discovered that the Opeke Track, normally part of this hike, is now closed to the public……

We had 20 happy trampers arrive at Outram for our walk on Wednesday.
