Ten hikers arrived at the Moeraki Beach Reserve where we were joined by 2 others. Conditions very different from reconnoitre the week before.

With 93.6mm of rain on Tuesday, the prospects for Wednesday’s tramp weren’t great. However, after a cool and overcast start, the weather improved to comfortable, if at times slightly windy, conditions.

It was predicted to be windy for our hike and boy oh boy was it windy.

Thanks to whoever ordered a perfect day weatherwise. We were really happy considering our previous trip had to be aborted because of a howling Southerly, low visibility and driving rain.
07/05/2025. Waikouaiti – Matakana. Grade 2.5. Combined. Leaders: Carol Thurlow, Jill Thomas and Clare Banks (with much help from Graham Thurlow)
35 hikers and trampers set off from the Waikouaiti Sports Ground walking down to the beach heading north, marvelling at how peaceful the sea was on a very still sunny day.

“Well it may be a case of third time lucky that we finally made this trip, especially with the help of Graeme’s map. 43 members in 11 cars enjoyed the ‘sunday’ drive to Kaitangata where we met up at the local you know what, before travelling on in convoy up and over that impressive bridge onto the island and around to the pumping station where we all parked up.

The proposed hike for today was to head up the Pineapple track and check out the surrounding area.
