Annual Report 22/8/2002

Taieri Recreational Tramping Club
Annual Report 2001-2002
22 August 2002
It is my privilege to present to you the 15th annual report of the Taieri Recreational Tramping Club.
We have enjoyed our usual wide variety of weekly tramps although in a period of 10 weeks, 9 tramps were changed because of ground conditions but only 3 tramps were cancelled over the entire year.
From 11 July 2001 to 26 June 2002
Main Tramp 381 Last Year 312    up 69
Alternatives 366  Last Year 269    up 97
Combined 354     Last Year 253     up 101
(1st of month)
The Three-tramp concept is going from strength to strength as well as both the main tramp and alternatives both being up in numbers.
Credit must be given to the programme committee of: Bob Heenan, George Haggie, Doug Moir Ian Fleming for the main tramps. Betty Bryce, Nancy Strang and Dot Taiaroa for the alternative tramps. And to you all for the help and knowledge I have gratefully received.
Financial membership stands at 81, we have two life members and seven new members: Anne Rose, Sandra Perkins, Pam McDonald, Lesley Edgeler, Muriel O’Neill, Kerry Walker and Arthur Heenan. We welcome them all and hope they will enjoy many happy tramping days.
We have received four resignations: Paddy Jenkins a member since 1991, Audrey Kimble and for health reasons, Mary Lawlor, a member since 1992.
Also with regret we accept a resignation from Mavis Winefield, a long standing member who joined the club on the 10 February 1988 and over the years contributed to our success.
We had a very successful and happy camp at Methven in November. 33 trampers experienced excellent weather and there were many good tramps thanks to the work of Claude Williams.
December’s Christmas dinner at J. Tees was enjoyed by 40 members and a big thank you goes to Dot Taiaroa for the lovely table decorations.
28 members also enjoyed the Christmas tramp and lunch at Berwick forest. This number was down on last year.
28 members enjoyed February’s camp at Arthur’s Point. Again there was lovely weather and tramping and I would like to thank Nelson Taiaroa and Claude Williams who visited in December to review the possible tramps in the area.
In March 45 members were on the bus trip to Daisy Bank walking along part of the historic rail trail back to the Hyde Railway Station.
April’s camp at Cromwell was well attended by 27 members and thank yous must go to Ian Fleming for organising the main tramps and Nelson Taiaroa for the alternatives.
June, and our midwinter’s walk and lunch at Cableways was a great success with 60 members attending, the biggest attendance yet.
My most sincere thanks to Bev Harvey for doing all our typing, and I also would like to thank the committee who have always made themselves available.
Bill Hunt and other members for keeping our tracks clear and therefore making the tramping more enjoyable.
Les Wiffen who stood down in October after many years of taking roll call and organising car rides. Thanks must also go to Claude Williams and Ian Fleming for carrying on the good work.
A special thanks must go to Nelson Taiaroa who does an excellent job in everything he has done for the club. Until you have worked with him you have no idea the work he puts in for our benefit. Thanks Nelson it is most appreciated.
Lastly, I must thank you all for your help and support. I have done my best and I have enjoyed it all. I admit I am a bit green but with all your help I have learned so much.
I wish our new President and committee all the best for their term of office and hope they have as much enjoyment in their tasks as what I have.
Thank you. – Colleen Gamble, President.

Thirty-one members of the Taieri Recreational Tramping Club, all above retiring age, proved that age is little handicap to enjoying the great outdoors when they visited Arthurs Point for a weekend of high country tramping on November 8-10.

Arriving at camp on Friday afternoon the group lost little time and explored areas both upstream and downstream of the Shotover Bridge before dark that evening.
Saturday proved the real challenge of the weekend when the party attempted the somewhat daunting tramp to the top of 1747m Ben Lomond.

Several members reached the top of this peak soon after mid-day with fantastic views of the whole Lake Wakatipu area and also peaks in the Southern Alps.

Still seeking excitement in this unique country, Sunday was spent on the high Moke Creek Track, again giving the party almost birds-eye views of this historic countryside.

Credit must go to Wendy and Diana for their camp management over the weekend and also to Ria and Catherine for previewing the weekend tramps. – Mervyn Hartman, Club Publicity Officer. Taieri Herald 26/11/1991.
