TAIERI RECREATIONAL TRAMPING CLUB

ANNUAL REPORT

FOR YEAR ENDED 30TH JUNE 2012

It is my pleasure to present the 25th Annual Report for the Taieri Recreational Tramping Club.

Another good year of tramping, hiking and rambling enjoyed, I am sure, by everyone. It never fails to amaze me how many Wednesdays are fine. No matter what the weather has been like on Tuesday it seems to clear by Wednesday. We have lost very few tramping days as, by not cancelling, we mostly get to have a walk somewhere.

(Thank you Bill for working out Stats)

2010/2011 2011/2012
Tramping Days 1 July to 30 Jun. 47 44
Numbers:
Trampers 250 243
Hikers 624 590
Ramblers 72 8
Total 946 841
Averages Per Tramping Day:
Trampers 5.3 5.5
Hikers 13.3 13.4
Ramblers 1.5 0.2
Total 20.1 19.1

We have had a pretty trouble free year as I recall. The advantage of having three levels of tramping means that there is usually a walk, hike or tramp that we can manage, depending on our health or fitness on the day. It is very hard at times to come to terms with the fact that our body won’t always keep up with what our mind thinks we can do. Something we all have to face at some stage. We should always remember the basic aim of our club is the recreational side of the tramping so that most of the people get the most enjoyment most of the time.

The end of the year walk and finger food lunch at Brighton Domain was a very happy day out and we really appreciated Bruce Spittle taking his guitar and song sheets for us to have a rousing sing along to end the day and TRTC year.

Our mid-winter lunch this year was held at the Waihola Tavern where we had a good meal and service in pleasant surroundings. Some of us enjoyed a walk in the morning round Waihola which gave us a good appetite for our meal.

Apart from these special days all our tramps and hikes have been very good and given pleasure and gratification to the majority. Whether we have pushed ourselves hard or found the track easy we all go home feeling satisfied with our effort as well as having enjoyed the good company of like-minded friends.

I would like to welcome the six new members who have joined us this year. Eric Callaghan, Neil Morrison, Bruce Thomson, Janice Yardly, Lester Harvey and Ian Hebbard. It is good to see some new and younger people coming into the club and I hope you will enjoy your tramps or hikes with us.

Sadly we have farewelled three of our members since our last AGM – Lesley Stapleton who died in October 2011, Carmel Lucas who died in January 2012 and one of our very early members, Peg Chisholm who died in May 2012. Peg joined the club in January 1987.

We also said goodbye to Linzi Murray when she returned to her home in Cornwall.

A big thank you to the Track committee for the time and work that goes into sorting out and finding suitable tracks for both trampers and hikers. This is not an easy task and takes all morning every six months as well as time before the meeting going through old programmes. Ideas for new places to go, as well as requests for favourites we have done before, are always welcome. The more suggestions that are given the easier the job. We are very lucky to have such a variety of places to go for tramps/hikes within reasonable travelling distance, thus not taking too long to get to the start of our outings. Seasonal and lambing conditions have to be taken into account as well as getting permission from land owners, DCC or forestry.

My sincere thanks to the committee for their help and support over the year. A special thank you to Ian Fleming for the sterling job he does as secretary/treasurer and has done for the last 7 years. Without him my job would be considerably harder. He also does an excellent job as webmaster of the blog site he created and keeps up to date.

I wish to say a personal thanks too to Shirley Fleming for her hospitality on our committee meeting days.

Thank you also to the following for their services to the club. Pat, for conscientiously recording the attendance at the carpark every week, Hazel for the lovely cards she creates and sends out as required for the club. Tom, our auditor and a special thanks to Fred from the hikers for the sweet boost after lunch.

To all members for your support and encouragement, my grateful thanks.

Annual Report 2010

TAIERI RECREATIONAL TRAMPING CLUB
ANNUAL REPORT
FOR YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2010
This is my first annual report (for what I have been informed is a two year term !!).
Sadly the year was marred by the deaths of two members, Mgaire Moir in March and Peg Allison in May.
Otherwise, and apart from adverse weather from time to time, causing two cancellations, I found the past year has been a good one and I trust most active members will agree with me that sharing together the same walking experiences continues to be an enjoyable pastime.
Total membership at end of 30 June was 72.
Compiled from weekly attendance records, the following stats. reveal no surprises but confirm impressions gained in noting the number of cars and passengers in each group as they leave the car park Wednesday mornings:

Yrs: 2008 – 9 2009 – 10
Average Number of Trampers 7 5
Average Number of Hikers 12 14
Average Number of Ramblers 3 3

Activity during the year included:
  • Day bus trip for 34 members to Gabriel’s Gully/Otago Dam in October 2009.
  • Albert Town Camp in April with 25 participants. I believe that there are still a number of good walks in that area should be consider it again in the future – always provided we can muster a sufficient number of members.
  • A unforgettable rail trail t ralmp for 24 members: Millers Flat/Horseshoe Bend to Beaumont. Again, numbers were borderline for the (increasing) cost of bus charter, but I fell that should not stop us at least discussing another day trip.
  • The Christmas lunch and walk at Aramoana. 23 members turned out. The walk was somewhat spoilt by the bad weather, but the day was saved by the lunch and Bruce Spittle’s excellent entertainment.
  • Mid Winters lunch at Logie’s Restaurant/Royal Tavern, Grn. Is. for 49. And again popular entertainment, preceded by a walk to Tunnel Beach.
  • Two ‘resurrected’ tramps from earlier programmes – Government Track, returning Kowhai Spur, last tramped 1991, and Green Point, last tramped 1995.
  • And a first, the exploration of new DCC routes around Harbour Cone.

Annual Report 2009

ANNUAL REPORT 2009

On average, 7 trampers turned out each week (down 3 on last year), 12 hikers (up one on last year), while the ramblers maintained an average of 3. Bad weather caused 3 Wednesdays to be abandoned altogether.
In November, a 3-day Camp was enjoyed by happy campers at Sutton.
Our Christmas hike and lunch were once again held at the Waiora Scout Camp and enjoyed by 40 members. After lunch Bruce Spttle on his guitar led us in a good old singsong.
In February, some of our members participated in the Relay For Life, an event for cancer victims and in particular Colleen Gamble, a long-time member of the club and a past president (2000-02)/ Sadly Colleen passed away shortly afterwards.
Also in February, our trampers combined with 13 members of the Christchurch Over 40s Club on an enjoyable Cape Saunders-Mount Charles tramp.
We had some drama in April when one of our hikers, Elaine Day, became ill on the John Bull track. The others in the party reacted brilliantly to the emergency, with Elaine being hoisted into the Rescue Helicopter which took her to Dunedin Hospital where she made a good recovery. Well done to all concerned.
This incident, along with other accidents in our club and other tramping clubs, made us realise that it would be remiss of us not tin ivestigate the purchase of 2 Emergency Locator Beacons. Stephen Bennett (Dorothy’s son) kindly helped us to fill in application forms to the Bendigo Valley Sports and Charity Foundation and the Otago Community Trust. Meanwhile Elaine Day’s family most generously donated the money for one beacon and with the Bendigo Valley Foundation’s prompt and favourable reply we now own 2 Navcom Emergency Locator Beacons. A great outcome which will ensure safer tramping!
On mid-year dinner was held at Fat Harry’s in June, where 37 members ate well and enjoyed George’s irreverent rendition of “As Time Goes by”.
My sincere thanks to the following:
Secretary-Treasurer, Ian Fleming, world famous in Mosgiel.
The Programme Committee and Bev Harvey for printing it.
Pat and Bill McLean for looking after the attendance roll.
Hazel Leslie, who makes and sends appropriate cards to people throughout the year.
Tom Stratton, our Auditor.
The Committee, which has been a pleasure to work with.
Finally, it’s been a privilege being your President for the past two years. Thank you all for your support, and I extend my best wishes to Bill McLean as he begins his term in the ‘hot seat’. (Only joking, Bill). – Peter Bathgate.

Annual Report 2008

Annual Report, 2008
It is with pleasure  that I present my report for the past year, when an average of 10 Trampers, 11 Hikers and 3 Ramblers have taken to the tracks and roads every Wednesday, with on 2 days cancelled by wet weather.
We have had two bus trips: one to Tawanui where 38 happy customers enjoyed their day in the Catlins, while earlier this year the 22 Km Knobbies way was ‘knocked off’ by 30 members, most of whom snored their way home after a strenuous day.
Our Christmas hike was at Whare Flat, followed by lunch at the Waiora Troupe Den, where 36 members enjoyed the peaceful bush surroundings.
47 attended the mid-year dinner at the Normanby Tavern.
The highlight of the year was undoubtedly our 20th Birthday Dinner held in the Mosgiel Railway Station Restaurant where 70 members and past members enjoyed fine food and wine, followed by the cutting of the cake by our life members.
After some speeches and various items by club members, the day concluded with community singing of some old favourites.
My thanks to Mary Young, Daphne McEwan and Peg Chisholm for organising this great day.
In conclusion I would like to thank:
1. The Programme Committee and Bev Harvey who prints it so well.
2. Hazel Leslie, who makes and sends sympathy and get-well cards.
3. Pat and Bill McLean who tick us off every week.
4. Ian, our Secretary-Treasurer who works countless hours for our club and only moans occasionally.
5. Tom Stratton, our auditor whose expertise has been of huge benefit to our club, especially this year with work required for notices of motion to comply with charitable organisations.
6. My committee, which has been so supportive of a “rookie” president.
And remember, we are always on the lookout for new members!! – Peter Bathgate.

Annual Report 2007

Presidents Report 2007
As Acting President, due to the sudden passing of our President, I have much pleasure in presenting the 20th Annual Report of the Taieri Recreational Tamping Club.
Our club has enjoyed a very successful tramping programme over the past 12 months. No Wednesday tramps were cancelled due to weather. An average of 24.5 have turned out each Wednesday with averages of 10.5 Trampers, 11 Hikers and 3 Ramblers.
The Christmas Lunch was at the Brighton Football Club Buildings with 35 attending. 52 travelled to the Outram Hotel for the Mid-Winter Lunch, the highlight of the day being the reading of George Haggie’s Poem.
Another highlight of the year for many was the 8-day bus tour, taking in Methven, Greymouth and Hanmer. 29 members enjoyed excellent tramps, accommodation, and the bus, ending with a wind-up dinner at Hanmer.
The Club held a camp at Alexandra in April 2007 with 19 attending. Good accommodation and enjoyable tramps were a feature of the camp.
The trampers walked the length of the Knobbie Range, and various distances were achieved alongside Lake Roxburgh.
The Club had 84 financial members for the year, including 6 Life Members. We welcomed 5 new members – Neil Buckley, Lorna Casey, Dinane Gillett, Abe Oskam and Helen Robb.
Again I want to acknowledge the good work of the Track Committee, who met twice during the year to set the Club’s tramping programme. Thank you also to the weekly tramp leaders for carrying out their duties so willingly. Thank you to Peter for taking the weekly roll call at the carpark.
I want to give a special thanks to our Secretary/Treasurer, Ian, and to all members of the committee and to all others who have contributed to our Club over this past year.
Thank you and happy tramping. – Arthur Heenan – August 2007.

Annual Report 2006

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2006

I have much pleasure in presenting the 19th Annual Report of the Taieri Recreational Tramping Club to you.

I begin on a note of sadness as we remember the passing of  2 members, both of long standing, Peggy Maxwell, who was a Life Member of this Club and Eric Bennett.

Our club has continued to enjoy a very successful tramping programme over this last year in spite of 4 Wednesdays being cancelled due to the weather.
The number of members turning out has been very good with an average of 27, made up of 11 Trampers, 12 Hikers and 4 Ramblers.

The Christmas Lunch was at Wingatui with40 attending. The mid-winter Lunch at the Shiel Hill Tavern was again well supported with 48 enjoying each other’s company over the meal.
The Club had on one camp in the past year, that being at Glenburn near Geraldine, 15 attended what was a very enjoyable camp.
After the cancellation of last summer’s club bus tour to Blenheim, a camp was planned at short notice for Alexandra in April, but insufficient interest from members meant that this also had to be cancelled.
Bus Trips – In October 39 went to Roxburgh, and in May 36 travelled to Miller’s Flat to follow the route of the old railway line back down to Beaumont. Both< of these trips were very well supported and successful.

The club bus tour to Blenheim last March was cancelled, due to insufficient numbers. However with< a grant of $3000.00 having been received from Pub Charity, and still on hand, a revised tour to Greymouth for next February has been planned and is fully booked.
I would like to thank the members of the sub-committees who organize both of these tours.

Financial Membership for the year was 84 including 4 Life Members. We had 2 resignations during the year – Eleanor Watt and Irene Morrison, but we welcomed 3 new members – Diana Mellon, Glenys Newton and Marjorie Spittle.

I want to acknowledge the good work of the Track Committee who meet twice yearly to sort out the club’s tramping programme. Thank you also to the weekly tramp leaders for carrying out their duties so willingly. Thank you also to Peter for turning up at the carpark each week to take the roll call.

I want again to say a very special thank-you to those who served on the committee this past year, for their contribution. I think that the committee members have worked very well together on your behalf.
My final thanks go to the Vice President, and others, who stood in for myself again on various occasions when I was unable to be present due to work commitments.
Thank you and Happy Tramping. – Arthur Heenan, August 2006.

Annual Report 2005

PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2005

It is my pleasure to present to you the 18th Annual Report of the Taieri Recreational Tramping Club.

Over the past year our Club has continued to enjoy a successful tramping programme, with only 3 Wednesdays cancelled due to bad weather. The turn out each day has been very good, with an average of 27 – made up of 14 Trampers, 11 Hikers and 2 Ramblers.

Once again the Christmas Lunch was at Harwood with 25 attending. And the mid-winter lunch at the Hotel Taieri was again very well supported, about 53 enjoying a good meal together.

Camps – There were 2 camps in November which unfortunately overlapped each other slightly. However 11 ent to Borland and 18 to Albertown. All enjoyed good tramping at these camps. In February only 9 went to Pounawe for an enjoyable camp.

The April camp at Gore was very ably led by Dorothy and Tom Stratton, who had made contact with members of the Hokonui Tramping Club to assist with their recces. 16 attended what proved to be a very enjoyable camp.

Bus Trips – In December 35 went to Trotters Gorge, where the problem of trying to accommodate a long tramp for the Trampers and a shorter one for the Hikers was noticeable, as some had a long wait for the last ones to arrive back at the bus. Happily the trip to the Rail Trail up  past Hyde was much better coordinated, 38 enjoying that day away.

Financial Membership for the year was 91 including 5 Life Memberships. Unfortunately we had to accept the resignation of Kerry walker, but on a happier note we welcomed 5 new members: Jacqui O’Donnell, Tash Hurst, Evelyn and Bob Entwistle and Lois Fenton.

I want to acknowledge the good work of the Track Committee who met twice during the year to sort out the Club’s Tramping Programme for the 2 main groups. Thank you also to the weekly tramp leaders for carrying out their duties of seeking land-owners’ permission (and thanking them afterwards); doing the recces and leading on the day, etc. Thank you also to Colleen initially and then Peter for turning up each week at the car park to take the roll call.

I want to say a very special thank you to those who served on the Committee for their contribution over the past year, and in particular I wish to acknowledge the work done by our very able secretary Dorothy.

My final thanks go to those who stood in for myself on various occasions when I was unable to attend due to work commitments.

I finish my report by commenting on the gap that exists between the Hikers and the Trampers because of the different physical ambitions of the two groups. I future I can foresee than on occasion separate camps may be needed to satisfy all, even though it divides the club to some degree. I ask you all to consider this from both sides for the good of the club.

Thank you and Happy Tramping. – Arthur Heenan – August 2005.

Annual Report 19/8/2004

President’s Report

It is my pleasure to present to you the 17th annual report of the Taieri Recreational Tramping Club.

Throughout the 2003/2004 year we have continued to enjoy our Wednesday tramps with very fewcancellations due to bad weather. Over the last year Trampers & Hikers each averaged 9 turning out per Wednesday, with the Ramblers averaging 2.

Our end of year lunch at  Harwood saw 34 attending and our midwinter lunch at Wobblies with 55 present again provided popular ways to mark the occasions.

I again acknowledge the  work of the track committee who meet for a long afternoon twice a year to allocate 100 tramps for our two major walking groups, assigning leaders, indicating degree of difficulty and anticipating seasonal and lambing conditions.

Thanks also to tramp leaders who dutifully accepted their role, faithfully carried out the recces, considerately sought permission from land owners and courteously phoned the club’s thanks to them after tramp.

Financial membership. 82? including  5 Life Members. (Nelson yet to supply these figures)

We sadly accepted the resignations of Ria Hakkaart, Win Harrex., Pam McDonald and Sandra Perkins.

We welcomed a record 12 new members: Vic Gill, Lesley Gowan, Annie Grant, Judy Grant, Bob & Nadia Madill, Evelyn Miller, Glenice Phelan, David Reid, Bruce Spittle, and Tom & Dorothy Stratton.

CAMPS

Our November camp at Fairlie had Claude & Lesley again leading us as they had the previous November at Timaru.
The Cromwell camp in February left us dissatisfied with the Chalets’ new administration’s reduction in kitchen facilities but was otherwise very successful. Brenda Hayes provided able leadership to Mt Difficulty and over the  Cardrona – Lowburn track.
The April camps divided us between Lorneville for 23 Hikers and Mavora for 7 trampers, the former washed out by the weather, the latter a wonderful time for the few who went. This division possibly indicates  further developments in the club’s history as the gap between the wishes of ambitious trampers and sedate hikers widens.
BUS TRIPS

43 went on the Gabriels Gully trip and 47 the Blue Mountains one. About the latter I’ll just say there were several bad calls exacerbated by a chilling wet storm. A lesson to us all.

To conclude: thanks to the Committee who have shared in the responsibility of guiding the club through yet another year with special mention of Nelson whose continuation of the Secretaryship stretched out to a further year beyond his preferred resignation date.

And of course, thanks to all members. Your enthusiasm and good company make belonging to this club the enjoyable experience it is. – Ian Fleming

Annual Report 21/8/2003

President’s Report.

It is my pleasure to present to you the 16th annual report of the Taieri Recreational Club.

Throughout the 2002/2003 year we have had some very enjoyable Wednesday tramps with the weather being particularly kind, resulting in only one cancellation as I recollect.

I want to acknowledge especially the  track committee who meet twice year to allocate 100 tramps for our two major walking groups, assigning leaders, indicating degree of difficulty and anticipating seasonal and lambing conditions. Some other groups have to plan for only 25 tramps for the year.

I want too to acknowledge the responsibility of tramp leaders in willingly accepting their role, faithfully doing the recces, considerately seeing permission from land owners and courteously phoning the club’s thanks after tramp.

Over the last year Trampers & Hikers each averaged 12 turning out per Wednesday, the Ramblers averaged 3 & an average of 29 turned out for Combined walks.

Financial membership. 82? including  4 Life Members. (Resignations: Elaine Day, Mairie Jenkins,  Mary Lawlor, Evelyn Miller.)

Our end of year and mid-winter lunches provided fitting ways to mark the occasions, with a wonderful number at the midwinter lunch, even if only a few stumped out for the St Clair street-walk of the day, of which a considerable proportion were some sterling Ramblers.

We had a week-day camp at Timaru in November with Claude & Lesley planning an excellent variety of walks to suit everyone. We came away knowing a great deal more about Timaru and its surrounds.

The highlight of a weekend camp at Tautuku Outdoor Education Centre Camp, with walks ably led by Lex was a circumperambulation of Tautuku Peninsula with sights of magnificent coastal rock formations to reward us. On the return trip with the majority fording across the Tautuku stream bar, the boat ferry was made a bit redundant but some of us had to return it!

A bus trip to Middlemarch to visit the Redan Crater and Sutton Salt Lake resulted in a comfortably full bus, with trampers of varying ability walking within their comfort zones. The journey began wet but the walking was dry if very windy. Thanks to Bob for his leadership.

The highlight of the year has to go to the Club’s 15th Birthday Celebration in February.  I can only repeat the appreciation we expressed then to Colleen for the excellent arrangements that made the occasion the success it was. The number of former members attending was a lovely surprise. The photo album is marvellous, thank to Bill. (Hands up those who haven’t seen through it yet).

Lastly I express thanks to the Committee who have shared in the responsibility of guiding the club through the year. We sadly farewelled Claude off the committee in February. I refrain from thanking Nelson at this point as we wish to thank him more suitably later in the agenda. – Ian Fleming

I wish our new President and committee all the best for their term of office and hope they have as much enjoyment in their tasks as what I have.
Thank you. – Colleen Gamble, President.

Annual Report 17/8/2000

TAIERI RECREATIONAL TRAMPING CLUB
ANNUAL REPORT 1999-2000
17th AUGUST 2000

On again it is my privilege to present to you this, the 13th Annual Report of the Taieri Recreational Tramping Club. It has been quite a low key year for the Committee with no extraordinary events occurring that needed drastic action.

It has been quite a sad year for the club, in that we have lost two well liked and respected members. Jack Roy had been a very active participant in club affairs and tramped with the club for many years and his knowledge of the outdoors and all aspects of tramping were well known They won’t be many of us who haven’t asked Jack for information about various tracks around the area when we’ve had to do recces. He is, and will be, greatly missed. Sylvia Williams was a more recent member but during her time with us she merged in the the club and became friends with everyone. Our thoughts are with the families of Jack and Sylvia, and especially Claude, who has continued to be an active member of our group. We must also spare a thought for our past member, Hugh Dickson. Hugh had been a member of the club for many years and it was only recently that he and Judith chose to resign.
On a happier note, I would like to congratulate Peg Chisholm, Joyce Shaw, Dot Taiaroa and Mary Maxwell on winning their battles with inness and we hope their recovery continues to be positive.

I would like to thank the committee, who have always made themselves available to discuss any issues and for organising all events for the club. Thanks again to the track committee for their input. Anyone who would like to serve on this group would be most welcome.

The tramps this year have mostly been enjoyable and interesting – the weather affecting 3 main tramps and 1 alternative. From 22nd Sept. 1999 unti 2nd Aug. 2000, 345 people attended the main tramps, an average of 14 each tramp day. 364 attended the alternative, an average of 14, and 220 attended the monthly combine tramp, an average of 22. These figures are generally equal to lat year’s figures.

The mid-winter walk and dinner at Arthur Daly’s at Green Island drew an attendance of  52 familiar faces, where the highlight of the year took place. This being the presentation of a chainsaw from the proprietor of Arthur Daly’s, Mr McCorrigan, much to the delight of the track-clearing committee.

I have already spoken of our appreciation of the track clearing people, but I would like to make special mention of a real track clearing enthusiast, who not only works along with our own group, but is known to be often out track clearing with other clubs and groups. That peroson,s if cours, Bob Heenan. So Bob, many thanks for all the hours you have contributed tokeeping tracks and pathways open, so others can benefit and enjoy their recreation.

Thanks to Les Wiffen for keeping the roll each Wednesday and organising car rides.
Thanks to Ray Wiggins for maintaining the Library and assisting with publicity. As you may known, Ray is not standing this trm for committee, so thanks Ray, for your contribution.

Our membership stands at 78 and we offer a special welcome to the new members. Don Hunter, Pam Hunt, Evelyn Cooperr and Audrey Kimble, who are having their first year tramping with the club.

I have enjoyed my time on the committee of the club. As Vice-President, and then as President. During that time we have tried always to kep committee business as low key as possible, so I must thank the committee for dispatching with any problems, with the least amount of fuss or aggravation.

Thank you all those who have contributed to make this club the happy club that it is. Thank you. – Les Smith.
