Lee Stream/Scorgies Farm

Lee stream square 104/02/2026. Lee Stream/Scorgies Farm. Grade 2.5 (hikers), 3.5 (Trampers). Combined.  Leaders: Sylvia Watts, Lynley McArley, Phil & Raewyn Keene.

47 keen walkers assembled at Memorial Park and headed into the west to Mahinerangi Rd where the lucky 13th car was waiting and we dropped down to Lee Stream to commence the walk circa 9.30am.

The group shambled on for 20 minutes to the morning tea spot overlooking the stream before 29 trampers headed off for some hill and stream workouts whilst 18 hikers went for the out and back valley walk.

Hikers
The road line changed underfoot in various places as we enjoyed the mix of sheep, beef and forestry along the valley walls. The grass growth on the road line was verdant and thick making for some sustained high stepping more the tiring on the return journey in the much warmer temperatures.

Lunch was taken at about the 7km mark, some finding shelter in the barn, others in the tree shade before setting out on the return journey at 12,30pm. The warmer temperatures and long grass meant for a call out to the Lee Steam Uber for the last kilometre or so, fair enough too!

At the car park the movement of the sheep flock adjacent to Mahinerangi Road indicated the trampers were not too far away as we headed to Outram with ice cream demand outnumbering coffees 8:1. A great ‘combined’ day out.

Trampers
On a super hot day at the first Wed in the month (Feb 4th) the Trampers and Hikers walked into a lovely spot where we all had our morning tea. At this point we all dispersed, the trampers headed up onto the tops heading towards a lunch break looking over at Allandale.

Our lunch stop was down in the valley prior to crossing the Lee Stream what a great spot we clambered under some huge slabs of rocks to escape the sun, it was a welcomed spot in the shade for a well earned rest.

Alas lunch is over and it’s time to climb upwards and it’s not long before we are on the tops. We crossed the Mahinerangi road and following a fence line which went thru a maze of tussocks heading down a steep incline here we all caught our breath and hydrated.

We are heading back to the parked cars at this stage. Fabulous walk, great members to walk with, day hot with awesome views. 13.4 km, 5 hrs 10 min. Many thanks to the farmers who allow us all to go thru their properties it is greatly appreciated. Until next time. Sylvie and Lyn
