At the bottom weir we crossed the Silverstream at a low flow and over some slippery rocks.

The true right section to the Powder Ridge turn off is historically a bit muddy and even after a summer- like spell it did not disappoint.

Back across the ‘Silvy’ and morning tea was had up on the water race track (Racemans) just past Taylors Creek.

Antony Hamel’s 2008 track guide states that “the Silverstream has provided water for Dunedin since 1881. The original water scheme consisted of an earthen water race 18.5 miles long feeding the Southern Reservoir.

A layer came off at the bottom of the North Coal Creek Track. Dry groundcover, cloud and plenty of bird song made for a pleasant climb.

The track was well marked and in good condition. On through the boulder field and upwards.

We had gained over 400 metres in height but the still clouds did not let us have the views.

We followed a very well kept Steve Amies Track back down to Racemans track, taking special care over the final steep section.

Again dry underfoot. We caught glimpses of the Taieri plain in sunshine on our descent and by the time we got back to the cars we were greeted with blue sky. The party walked very well indeed such that there was even time for a coffee in Mosgiel for those who craved caffeine.
Total elapsed time was just under five and a half hours. Given the current fuel crisis, many commented that we are so lucky to have such wonderful tramping so close to the city. Amen to that.
