Hereweka Road / Portobello

Square19/02/2025. Hereweka Road / Portobello . Grade 3.5. Trampers.  Leaders: Di Bezett, Lyn Keene.
Twenty three of us set off in lovely sunshine. We had to stop on Hereaweka road for rain jackets but it wasn’t cold, although it was very muggy.

We had a well deserved morning tea at the top of the Leith Track where we had beautiful views looking down to the harbour and it had stopped raining.

It was a slow but steedy climb up  through nice Kanuka forest to come out below Harbour Cone.

We then traversed around Harbour Cone and had lunch under a big knarley macrocarpa tree as it started to rain again and the wind came up.

After lunch we did the second part of the figure eight, through more kanuka forest just a tad slippery after the rain but  everyone was managing and it wasn’t too bad underfoot.

We came back to where we veered off, back up and over the Leith Track.  Some of us went for a  cuppa and others opted for a well deserved icecream in the brilliant sunshine.
