15/01/2025. Moeraki Millennium Track Moeraki Township to Moeraki Boulders. Grade 2.5. Hikers. Leaders: Neville Griffiths and Dave Roberts.
A group of 13 hikers in 4 cars made the trip to Moeraki and met up at the car park adjacent to the public toilets in the Moeraki township.
It was a beautiful day for hiking, it was sunny but not too hot and there was very little or no wind.
After exchanging new year wishes and chatter and making use of the toilets, we made our way past the Tavern and the now shut Fleurs Restaurant (it has a For Sale sign on it if anyone is interested) and walked the short part of the Millennium track up the hill to the Moeraki lookout for morning tea.
From our morning tea spot at the lookout, we enjoyed great views both out to sea and of Moeraki Bay.
Making our way back down the track we spotted several seals and sea lions basking in the sun.
We headed back past to the toilets to where the Millenium Track to the Boulders starts and followed the track along the beach in parts and the shoreline above through trees and shrub. We then walked down onto the beach and after a pleasant 2 km walk along the beach we arrived at the Moeraki Boulders.
At the Boulders there were a number of visitors and tourists who had made their way down to the beach from the Boulders Café. After wandering around the Boulders, we found a nearby spot at the bottom of the bank and out of camera line so not to spoil anyone’s photos of the Boulders for lunch.
After enjoying our lunch on the beach in the sun and observing people coming and going and taking photos of the Boulders, we walked down to one of the large Boulders for a group photo which some kind man offered to take for us.
After the photo we made our way back along the beach and the Millennium track back to Moeraki and the cars. Because of the time we decided that the Gallery Café at Waititi was a better place for Coffee as the Outpost Café in Waikouaiti closed at 3pm.
The Gallery Café at Waitati was an excellent choice and at our debrief over coffee the consensus that it was a great hike and a very enjoyable day. The total distance walked was 10kms and thanks to the hikers who came along and to Helen Morris for taking the photos.
