25/09/2024. Wakari / Kaikorai Loop. Grade 1.5. Hikers Leaders: Jenny Finnerty and Ady Whitson
Eventually 16 of us gathered at the meeting place and walked several metres along Wakari Road to the Bain Reserve
A lot of the land around Wakari was owned and farmed by Ady’s relations. Also the Mcleods. After Bruce S. tried unsuccessfully to sell some real estate? we carried along to track that took us down to Centennial Ave to where we eventually met up with Ady. We are now 17.
Up another track we arrived in the older part of Wakari which was a big state housing area started around the 40’s and 50’s. We carried on through streets and lanes (with lots of great memories for me) to Balmacewen Road
and a wee jaunt around Maori Hill and along to Lyn Street and the Kaikorai Marae.
I had tried earlier to contact the Marae office but to no avail so we had lunch in the Civil Defence Area.
After lunch we went and looked at the Community Garden….
and then walked along a lovely short track which is alongside the Kaikorai Stream.
Back onto Nairn Street we then went through Summerset to Craighall Cresent and up two fairly steep tracks which brought us back to Wakari.
We carried on through another few streets looking at more gardens and back to the cars to complete the loop after having a lovely 9km leisurely walk. What else would you do on a sunny Dunedin day?
Thanks Jan B for being tail end Charlie until Ady finally found us.
Jenny
