Square 150 Hikers17/07/2024. Hikers. Concord Creations Grade 2. Leaders: Jan Butcher.  &  Jenny Finnerty.

Just 6 hikers met up at PJ Park & travelled to Emerson Street, Concord to meet up with 7 town folk.
So, 13 of us set off up the old Main Road to the top of the Southern Motorway where we turned up the shortcut lane (as it is known to the locals – Jay told me as she lived up there many years ago) We took a right then left into Pladda Street at the end of which was a greenway where we stopped for morning tea. Across the playground we followed the lane downhill, turning left then right into Riselaw Road, passing Sarah Cohen School – formerly Riselaw Road School. A new Sarah Cohen school is under construction on the land behind. We turned off around Panmure Avenue noticing some houses sitting high towards the sun and others built below the road and wondered how they managed to cut their grass frontage which was very steep in some cases. Back onto Riselaw Road we crossed at the intersection with Corstorphine Road onto Crammond Avenue where the writer lived for 20 years up until getting married & stopped to admire the vista of the Otago Harbour.

We walked up the lane beside our house to Clermiston Avenue where Pam Clough lived above our house and Janice Yardley lived opposite Pam. Carrying on a little way up Corstorphine Road we turned into another lane which took us to the other side of Clermiston Ave, crossed the road, walked down another lane, bringing us out to Dovecote Ave. A wee bird told me that Jenni Wright may have lived in these parts a long time ago as well! Arriving at a sports ground we walked over to the pavilion where there was seating for all in brilliant sunshine – no wind – to relax and have lunch.

After lunch we travelled uphill, walking past Neville’s lovely home and continued on through newer houses in the area bringing us out onto Stenhope Crescent. Neville was helpful in showing us a couple more lanes which were a shortcut through Mulford Street coming out to Roy Crescent where we entered a greenway via some steps and walked across the grass to the only ablution block we located all day and to our destination.
