06/11/2024. Deep Creek Weir. Grade 3. Combined. Leaders: Barbara Shackell, Wendy Langley, Carolyn Pridham, Sue Johnstone.
28 set off in absolute perfect weather, past Rocklands Station on the Old Dunstan Road, until reaching the Te Papanui gate.
Some of us left our cars here and walked up to the pine trees that others drove to. While the ones were energetically walking, the others were industriously collecting and bagging pine cones for RDA fundraising.
Morning tea was enjoyed under the trees before we proceeded up the road and across farmland until we reached the track around the pipeline. Barbara read us some interesting facts about the history behind the Deep Creek pipeline and weir.
We followed the track which meanders above the creek, stopping frequently to admire the spectacular gorge, river scenery, and surrounding landscape. The track ends at the weir. After the viewing of this we returned along the track stopping for lunch where we could safely perch, with a view to admire.
After lunch we continued back taking a break where we all comfortably could sit to be instructed by John on how to use the PLB, which leaders take with them on every trip. This was informative and definitely good to know. Thanks, John.
Once we were back on the road there was a split of walkers again as we headed back to cars. Back in Outram we enjoyed afternoon tea.
