Thirty-one members of the Taieri Recreational Tramping Club, all above retiring age, proved that age is little handicap to enjoying the great outdoors when they visited Arthurs Point for a weekend of high country tramping on November 8-10.
Arriving at camp on Friday afternoon the group lost little time and explored areas both upstream and downstream of the Shotover Bridge before dark that evening.
Saturday proved the real challenge of the weekend when the party attempted the somewhat daunting tramp to the top of 1747m Ben Lomond.
Several members reached the top of this peak soon after mid-day with fantastic views of the whole Lake Wakatipu area and also peaks in the Southern Alps.
Still seeking excitement in this unique country, Sunday was spent on the high Moke Creek Track, again giving the party almost birds-eye views of this historic countryside.
Credit must go to Wendy and Diana for their camp management over the weekend and also to Ria and Catherine for previewing the weekend tramps. – Mervyn Hartman, Club Publicity Officer. Taieri Herald 26/11/1991.
