29. 21/06/2023 Hikers Victory Beach Grade 2 Leaders: Avis and Maria

The sunny day helped top off another very enjoyable walk to and along Victory Beach.
The flywheel, the only remaining evidence from the shipwreck of the “Victory “ cargo and passenger ship in 1861, was still visible and a highlight for those seeing it for the first time. The presence or two seals stopped some of us venturing too close to the flywheel.
Morning tea in the cave of the small pyramid, lunch after traversing the sandy climb to the start of the loop walk then a break back at the small pyramid while two of our 22 walkers climbed to the top of the pyramid to gain a magnificent view of the reserve and beach. We rounded the day off with a lovely afternoon tea at Glenfalloch.

Distance from car-park: 24 Km.

Twenty eager hikers departed Macandrew Bay car park on a cool grey morning. We walked along the harbourside walkway as far as McTaggart Street where we stopped  at the Company Bay reserve for morning tea. Unfortunately, the native plant nursery was closed for the day so we were unable to do the planned visit.  However, Jill was able to provide us with some information on the work that was carried out there to provide native plants for planting out on the peninsula.

Onwards and upwards we made our way up the road and on to the track, climbing over some stiles, walking across farmland and up the hill towards Camp Rd.

We stopped several times to catch our breath and to admire the wonderful views of the peninsula. After the steady climb we reached our lunch stop on Camp Rd near Larnach Castle.

We then continued our walk along to Pukehiki where we visited the lovely little community church, with its loo with a view!

From here we walked along Highcliff Rd to Greenacres track and proceeded downhill to Macandrew Bay.

It was different to be one of the only 2 for refreshments after a pleasant walk on Hatchery Road at Portobello.  It was at the Aquarium’s marine studies centre that our group of 15 were afforded a very interesting presentation by Tamlyn Somerford on their ongoing research that is currently being carried out.

Our trip by bus from the Edgar Centre was a change of outlook from traveling by car.  It was a very pleasant day for what was a short walk to a laid-back lunch stop looking out to Taiaroa Heads.

Club members have been out and about walking and on their bikes in lots of beautiful places in their local areas. We have been so lucky to have good weather.  Many have also achieved great things working and relaxing in their gardens and around home.

Time to reflect in lock down.  A bit sombre perhaps, but today would have been Denim’s 17th birthday. A Golden Labrador, he was my son’s guide dog for 8 years, and my pet for 5 years in his retirement. With tramping off-limits because it was the first day of the COVID-19 lockdown for August 2021, we decided a pictorial record of some members activities might be interesting. These photos were taken by members between noon on Wednesday 18th August and noon on Thursday 19th August. Some were taken during the limited exercise opportinities available. Some are recording what people do at home when unable to go out. So what follows is a random selection of Club members activites over a 24-hour period in these strange times. I have not been feeling the greatest, so no activities outside for me. But been busy with my leadlighting in stead. I am making panels for inside doors. The first has been completed with the dog’s approval and working on the second one, a real labour of love! Everybody keep well and safe. Marijke
