15 hikers met at the Warrington Domain.

After “Happy New Year” hugs all round we set off down to the beach and found a sheltered spot to have morning tea.

We then carried on with a promise of a leisurely walk, to the estuary. Half way around, the water was looking like maybe we could get wet feet so the leader made an executive decision to go bush for the short walk to dry land. Well!!!! it ended up being a cross between a recce and an Intrepid Journey episode. Alec took to the front and slashed paths through bracken, tall grass, bramble, vines etc. We found a deer fence with the path on the other side. We did eventually find our way to civilization after about half an hour and only a few of us had cuts and no one was lost. A good laugh had by all.

The rest of the walk paled in comparison except we stopped for lunch at the St Barnabas Church and were privileged enough to be able to go inside and to look at the lovely wee church with magnificent windows.

After lunch we carried on over the railway line and up Reservoir Road to look at the fabulous views. We then carried on along through Warrington and back to the cars. Coffee was at the Waitati Gallery Cafe.

About 8 plus kms. Thanks Alec for you assistance – I will put your name forward for track clearing and Jay as Tail End Charlie.

Cheers Jenny

When our 16 intrepid hikers set off on the journey to Warrington the temperature at the carpark in Mosgiel was -2 degrees C!! But clear skies showed promise of a lovely winter’s day. We picked up some extra punters at Waitati so there were 20 of us who arrived at Warrington Domain at 1015.

After a short walk we stopped for morning tea at a lovely sun-drenched spot with plenty of tree roots available for seating and views out to a tranquil Blueskin Bay. Thankfully the tide was still halfway out so we were able to enjoy the hike along the back beach for approx. 45 minutes. Interesting to meet a lady with her 9 obedient dogs in tow, and to spot the flat-bottomed barges collecting cockles in the bay.

We then proceeded to walk along the front beach by which time the temperature had warmed up noticeably, and the views out to sea were spectacular.

Lunch was back at the Warrington Reserve and afterwards we trekked around the peaceful village. Neil pointed out several dwellings of interest including the Manor House and the Futuro (Spaceship) house.

Margreet tested the hikers’ knowledge when she described the historical St Barnabas Anglican Church while in fact we were standing in front of the local Presbyterian Church!! Grant and Barbara called her out for the mistake, much to the amusement of all and sundry.

We then meandered on and passed the rather tatty building that was once a ‘4 Square’ shop; and the crib/bach which at one time belonged to Neil’s family. He was able to show photos of bygone times when he was a bonny wee lad at Warrington!

After arriving at the Warrington Domain, all 35 of us, we had a cuppa before setting off. We moved on up the hill towards the settlement. After giving the large mixed group of hikers and tramper’s a health and safety talk re: road rules, we set off through a track which was a bit muddy in parts, but ok.

At the top was the St Barnabas church which we had a wee look around area after which we crossed the road to a no exit road that took us up the hill to look at some of Dunedin’s great views down the coast then over Blue Skin bay.

We couldn’t find the 3 Ramblers but I heard tell they were sheltering from the wind beside  a macrocarpa hedge.

After lunch we did a 40 minute walk along the beach, brrrr, then off for a nice hot drink and piece of “sweet” slice at the Blue Skin Cafe. Another good day!     Jenny and Faye

25 happy hikers and 6 ready ramblers set off for Warrington  Beach.  In calm conditions and at low tide we walked along the length of the beach before stopping for the obligatory morning tea break – with soft sand beneath us making for a comfortable rest.  We carried on again in softer sand this time making hard work of it …

… until we found a track taking us back around to the domain where it was decided to have an early lunch to beat the impending rainfall.

After lunch, as the rain had not yet arrived, we dropped our backpacks in the cars and walked around the block, admiring  some interesting houses and hedges, and by the time we returned to the cars there was a few drops of rain appearing.  So with good timing we headed off to Blueskin Cafe where we arrived just ahead of the trampers.  It was a full house as we chatted happily and were thankful we had a good day out and didn’t get wet!

Trip Report Wednesday 16th March 2016 – Warrington Beach

A calm but overcast morning provided good tramping weather for 23 hikers. We left the cars at the picnic ground and a half-hour walk took us up Hill Road to the junction with Park Road then round to the Esplanade for a pleasant morning tea just above the beach.

After a quick scramble down to the beach, it was a short walk to the track leading back to the Surf Club. Here we turned left along the track through the pines, to reach the sewage ponds after about 30 minutes. The track to the left led us back to the beach, and a long trudge to the end of the spit and an early lunch, disturbed only by loud screams from Liz as a mouse invaded her territory.

Lunch at end of spit. Happily before the mouse invasion.

As it was just past high tide the beach on the inlet side was still covered in places and the sand very soft in others. We alternated between beach and the track above for some way

before returning to the main beach and the walk back to the cars. This was a short but pleasant hike, and left plenty of time for the now customary coffee stop at Blueskin Nurseries. –  Judy and Shona
